If you install a modern electric fireplace there is a good chance it will come with a remote control. Depending on the model and the features of your particular model you should be able to control things like on and off, the heat on and off, and temperature if it has a thermostat. If you have an led fireplace you can also control the colors and intensity of the flames. The amenities your fireplace has the more options you can control.

If you just have a basic electric fireplace you can even purchase an after market electric fireplace remote that will at least turn the unit off and on. This will come in handy especially if your fireplace is in your bedroom. After all who wants to get up and turn their fireplace off after they start to drift off to sleep?
New gas unit usually come with a remote control too. These are usually remote frequency or RF remote controls. This means that they use radio waves instead of infrared rays like your TV remote uses. These are the same radio waves that your garage remote control uses, but there are so many combinations the remotes will not interfere with each other.
If your gas fireplace doesn’t come with a remote there are after market gas fireplace remotes you can purchase too. You will have to install the receiver in the fireplace for the transmitter to work. The receiver usually requires electricity, but many gas fireplaces will have power because many come equiped with an electric blower. If your fireplace is not wired for electric power you can always opt for a battery controlled receiver.
New remote control options range from the simple off and on switch to touchscreen remotes with thermostats. If you need a remote for your system it is easier to get a system that already has a remote installed. If not then you will have to do a little research to make sure you get the correct remote that is compatible with your unit. You may also need a contractor to install the receiver or run the power lines.
Having a fireplace remote can just be another convenience in are automated world. It’s great to turn a fireplace across the room off and on without having to leave your comfy spot on the couch. And if you are already in bed, forget about it, the remote is the only way to go. A remote is not mandatory, but it is a nice convenience.
