Fireplace Blowers

Fireplace blowers are kind of a mysterious fireplace accessory. Does your fireplace have a blower? Turn on the blower? The truth is that many fireplaces are designed for blowers, especially gas and electric fireplaces. If you have a new home built with a natural gas fireplace, chances are a built in blower will be one of the options offered under the myriad of new home upgrades available.

If you have a blower that is built in and it goes out it is easy to install a replacement if you can find the same make and model. Just remove your old blower which would include undoing the mounting brackets and unhooking the power. Then install the new replacement the same way. If you have a natural gas fireplace that doesn’t have a blower, but you would still like to increase the heat output with a blower than you can find aftermarket models.

Some aftermarket fireplace blowers are designed for easy installation. Many include mounting brackets, wiring, and instructions. You will still need electricity and room to mount the blower. But the basics are to install the blower or the fan system and hook up the electrical and mount the temperature gauge and the fan control switch. When the temperature gauges gets to a certain temperature the blower should turn on and push warm air away from the fire and into your room. The fan speed knob should allow you to turn the fan up or down to control the warm air flow.

If you don’t have power in your fireplace there are radiator types of blowers that you can get too. These are like fireplace grates that heat up as the fire burns. Air is sucked into one end of the tube and as it flows through the tube it heats up and then gets blown out from the other end. Some of these don’t require power at all and are designed to improve the heat efficiency of wood burning stoves and fireplaces.

There are also heat exchangers that work like a radiator and suck in cold air then circulate it around the burning fire and blow the air out of the other side. Some higher end electric fireplaces have built in blowers and heaters so that they electric fireplace is more than just something pretty to look at. It is also an electric heater.

They type of blower you get for your fireplace depends on whether your fireplace is gas, wood burning, or electric and whether you have a power supply or not. Once you decide what type of fireplace you have and whether you have power or not then you can start shopping for the appropriate blower. Once you find the blower you want you need to measure the fireplace and make sure you get the correct size. Other things you may want to consider when shopping for a fireplace blower are ease of installation, heat efficiency, and how quiet it runs.
